Keep in mind that your appointment will only be 30 minutes in length. Some matters are very complex, and if sufficient advice to deal with your situation cannot be provided within half an hour, it is possible that you will need to hire a lawyer. Our duty counsel can assist in referring you to other lawyers if necessary. Duty counsel will respect your legal matter with strict confidentiality. In addition, all student volunteers sign confidentiality agreements.
Please bring along any documents (contracts, letters, visual aids, etc.) that you feel may be relevant to your issue and provide context for the lawyer. Where possible, preparing questions in advance and highlighting problematic areas in a document will help to make the most of your appointment.
Although ALAS duty counsel are funded by Legal Aid Ontario, clients are asked to donate $10 per appointment to help offset the costs of administration for the service. Receipts can be issued upon request.
